The island’s laidback, welcoming atmosphere makes it the perfect destination for family fun in the water. And since it’s only 50 minutes from Houston, it’s a good bet you’ll get there before the little ones start asking, “Are we there yet?”

Paddle on! Kayakers will want to explore the three marked trails—ranging from 2.6 to 4.8 miles—at Galveston Island State Park, whose calm waters are perfect for paddling. Plan a weekend stay at the park’s camping site, and make sure to explore the hiking paths along the dunes on the Gulf.

Ride the tides! Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the hottest sports in the country. With zero experience required, anyone can get out in the ocean and give it a try. Take private or group lessons, or attend a SUP camp at Galveston Paddleboard Center.
