Galveston is more than just a great beach city. It is a place where generations of islanders have lived (and never left) and helped shape a distinct history. As you stroll through the neighborhoods, you’ll find glimpses of the past on every corner: in the gorgeous 19th-century Victorian homes, the family- owned businesses of residents who migrated here from as far away as Greece and Italy, and the attractions that either have withstood catastrophic storms or were rebuilt from scratch because of them.
No matter where you turn, there is someone or someplace with a story to tell. If you ask, they’ll share the hidden secrets of the island - even more than what you’ll find in this comprehensive destination guide. From the prominent families that built Moody Mansion and Bishop’s Palace to the presidents and Hollywood stars who once lodged at the Hotel Galvez & Spa, there are always new tidbits to learn. The island truly is a magical place that you’re certain to remember for the rest of your life, especially when it’s time to pass on a bit of your own history.
Galvestonians place high regard on education as the means of improving their city and its residents. The city has a strong public school system and several private schools. Each year, high school graduates of Ball High School and O’Connell College Preparatory High School (a private Catholic school) are accepted by the top colleges and universities in the state. Some graduates continue their education on Galveston Island at one of three institutions of higher learning – Galveston College, The University of Texas Medical Branch or Texas A&M University at Galveston.
